Our goal is to increase access to healthcare and education in rural Nicaragua by empowering youth to become agents of change in their communities.

Job Summary & Essential Duties

The Volunteer Accountant will assist the Executive Committee with all fiscal matters related to operating a charity. In this position, you will work to improve several key financial systems including cash flow, budget, signing authority and tax receipts. Reporting to the Director, Strategic Operations, this role can be performed remotely and requires a minimum of 3 hours per week (or one evening a week).

Primary Responsibilities

• Design improved systems to manage components of cash flow, budget, expense tracking, annual reporting and charitable tax receipts etc.

• Contribute to the setting of the overall financial direction of the organization.

• Educate executive committee members on the processes & procedures of filings of a charitable organization.

• Determine a three (3) year financial plan for the organization

• Participate in a monthly meeting (in person or virtually), to be scheduled in advance

• Engage with cross-functional teams to better understand our organization

• Advertise DFD/NFN fundraising events to your network

• Support other DFD initiatives where possible


• Education (Diploma or University Degree) in accounting, finance or business and/or equivalent experience

• CPA, CA, CFA designation, an asset

• Some knowledge of Canadian Charity law and/or non-profit accounting best practices, an asset

• Previous not-for-profit experience, an asset

• Able to work independently and takes initiative to complete tasks assigned

• Comfortable in team setting and willingness to learn from others

• Growth mentality and operational mindset

• Bilingual in Spanish and English, an asset
