Engineer Technician Job Description

The Engineer technician ‘s role is to perform a wide variety of paraprofessional and technical work in collecting information relative to City engineering functions and activities; assist with the development of guidelines, policies and procedures pertaining to engineering and public works; provide information regarding City Standards and associated development fees to the public; provides liaison with consultants, developers and staff of other agencies; operate computer-aided design to update and create drawings detailing streets, utilities and planning information and assist with project management for capital projects.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
Create and modify maps and engineering drawings for streets, utility placement, right of way and other infrastructure using an AutoCAD system
Prepare exhibits using AutoCAD as needed.
Reviews plans and subdivision plans for compliance with code requirements.
Perform data collection in the field and office as needed.
Assist in preparing specifications for projects to be contained in requests for proposals issued by the City.
Provides assistance to the public by providing information related to engineering and public works issues.
Assist and integrate work with other City Departments that require engineering or mapping support.
Works with developers or builders to ensure that engineering work conforms to City Standards.
Process and track Project submittals.
Process permit applications and issue permits; determine and collect fees.
Gather data and make accurate engineering computations.
Answer questions and provide information to the public concerning engineering activities.
Interpret, implement, explain, and apply applicable laws, codes, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.

Basic Qualifications:
Training in Civil Engineering or related field.
0-4 years’ experience in Civil Engineering or related field.
EIT certification desirable (could be waived if more experience shown)
AutoCAD skills
Basic understanding of residential and commercial Land Development and public works
Written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint
Proficient in Microsoft Access would be a plus
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary
Good customer service skill
Possession of a valid Class C or higher California driver’s license.

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills could qualify.
